Grilling is a great way to cook up delicious and flavorful meals, but it can create a terrible mess. Read how to clean grease of concrete and other surfaces.
Grease leaking from the grill can accumulate pretty fast in your outdoor area, including your concrete patio, deck, or driveway.
What To Do First?
It makes sense to stop the grill from leaking first and you should put something under the leak as soon as you notice the grease leaking out.
“If you have BBQ grease on your concrete and are wondering how to clean it off, here are a few tips to help you get the job done.”
- Use a putty knife: The first step in cleaning BBQ grease off your concrete is to remove as much of the excess grease as possible. A putty knife is a great tool for this task. Simply scoop the surface of the concrete to remove any large chunks of grease or grime.
- Apply a degreaser: Once you have removed as much of the grease as possible, it is time to apply a degreaser. Degreasers are specifically formulated to break down and remove grease and grime. To use a degreaser, follow the instructions on the label and apply it to the affected area. Let it sit for a few minutes to allow it to work its magic. If you don’t have a degreaser use dish soap as an alternative.
- Scrub the surface: After applying the degreaser, it is time to scrub the surface to remove the remaining grease and grime. Use a scrub brush or a scouring pad to scrub the surface in a circular motion. Be sure to pay extra attention to any stubborn spots or stains.
- Rinse the surface: Once you have scrubbed the surface, it is time to rinse it off. Use a hose or a bucket of water to rinse away the degreaser and any remaining dirt or grime. Be sure to rinse the surface thoroughly to remove all traces of the degreaser.
- Allow the surface to dry: Once you have rinsed the surface, allow it to dry completely. Depending on the weather and the humidity, this may take a few hours.
Following these steps, you can successfully clean BBQ grease off your concrete. Remember to use a putty knife as soon as possible to remove as much of the excess grease as you can.
Be sure to apply a degreaser to help break down and remove the remaining grease and grime. With a little elbow grease and the right cleaning products, you can get your concrete looking clean and fresh again.
For older stains, you can use a pressure washer. I tried that once and had to do the whole patio because of the difference in cleanness and color with the rest of the patio.
Ways To Prevent Grease Stains
One of the things I learned to appreciate after sitting on my hands and knees scrubbing my concrete patio is my under-the-grill protection mat.
Not only will they protect your deck and patio from grease spots but also from burn spots. This is especially important on a wooden deck.
It is always good to keep an eye on your grill and make sure that all the possible holes that can cause it to leak grease are either sealed or you have something under the grill.
Regularly cleaning the bottom of your grill is also almost a fail-safe to prevent your grill from leaking grease on your concrete patio.
A great way to prevent grease from getting into the cracks of your concrete is to seal the surface.
